The best choice depends on what you want help with.
Try Apple’s built-in tools first for everyday suggestions and summaries. Consider LittleDraft for included AI allowances and reusable references, MailTwin for a one-time app licence and engine choice, or Mailbutler for tracking and team workflows alongside AI.

Which one fits your inbox?
Apple Intelligence: start with the built-in option
A sensible first step for light email: reply suggestions, summaries and Priority Messages without another helper app. Apple also lists personalized Smart Reply in Mail. Check the features available on your OS, in your language and region; do not assume every Apple Intelligence task runs offline. [1]
LittleDraft: included AI and reusable references
Choose this workflow when replies need your account’s writing style, policies, product notes or captured details. Basic and Pro include cloud allowances without provider keys or separate AI bills. Pro adds Pre-Drafts, Capture Context and eligible local drafting. It is a monthly subscription; Private Mode currently drafts in English and German.
MailTwin: one-time licence and engine choice
Consider MailTwin if you prefer to own the app and choose your AI engine. It learns per-account styles and includes summaries and cleanup tools. The app licence does not cover cloud inference: your provider’s pricing and policies apply. Local engines require suitable hardware and setup. [4] [6]
Mailbutler: AI with tracking and team tools
Consider Mailbutler when email tracking, signatures, templates, mail merge and shared work matter alongside drafting. Smart Assistant writes, improves and summarizes messages; Smart Automations can prepare replies for review. AI requires Smart or Business after the trial, with pricing per user. [11] [14]
Privacy depends on the processing mode.
Apple combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute for some requests. It says Private Cloud Compute data is used only for the request and is not retained or accessible to Apple. This is not a promise that every Apple Intelligence feature works offline. [3]
LittleDraft Cloud AI sends permitted drafting context through LittleDraft’s service to its AI provider. Pro Private Mode processes supported drafts on your Mac without automatic cloud fallback. Online activation is required first; monthly local access must refresh for a renewed paid period. Account services and email delivery remain online.
MailTwin says cloud requests, including necessary email content and selected examples, go directly to your chosen provider. Local engine options can process on your Mac. Licensing, updates and optional telemetry are separate network traffic. [9]
Mailbutler’s Smart Assistant policy says selected email bodies and subjects may go through Mailbutler to Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service in the EU. An offline drafting mode is not documented in the reviewed sources. [13]
LittleDraft’s cloud workflow supports macOS 15 or later. Pro Private Mode needs a compatible Apple silicon Mac, macOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled with its model downloaded, eligible Pro access and online activation. Local drafting currently supports English and German.
What the 0.20.56 test build adds
The test build adds clearer mode and activation indicators, stronger English/German instruction handling, a bounded German polishing pass and checks that help catch language errors, missing identifiers or copied instructions. It also refines the composer and limits background work under resource pressure. Review every reply; these checks do not guarantee accuracy.
Little Engine remains online. In the 0.20.56 test build, invoking it from Private AI shows what information may leave the Mac and requires approval for that request. Ordinary drafting stays local. The stable 0.20.52 release predates this research exception.

A one-time app purchase and an included-AI subscription cover different things. Count provider usage, seats, taxes, billing periods and the features you need. LittleDraft allowances reset each paid period without rollover; requests using an exhausted allowance pause, with no automatic overage charges.
A few practical questions
Do I need to switch email apps?
No. All four options work in or alongside Apple Mail. You can keep your existing inbox and accounts.
Which is the best free option to try first?
Start with the Apple Intelligence features already available on your compatible Mac. Check OS, language, region and usage limits. LittleDraft, MailTwin and Mailbutler offer trials with different limits; these trials are not interchangeable with unlimited free use.
Which assistants can learn my writing style?
LittleDraft and MailTwin document per-account style learning. Apple now lists personalized Smart Reply, but availability depends on your system. Mailbutler offers tuning controls; its Smart Respond FAQ says it cannot be trained on your personal email-writing style.
Which option keeps drafting on my Mac?
LittleDraft Pro Private Mode and MailTwin’s supported local engines can draft locally on suitable hardware. Apple Intelligence uses on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute for some requests. Mailbutler documents online Smart Assistant processing. Check the selected mode, activation requirements and any separate online services.
Do these AI tools send replies without my review?
The reply workflows reviewed here produce drafts for you to review and send. LittleDraft does not send automatically; Mailbutler’s Smart Automations prepare reviewable drafts, and MailTwin’s setup guide ends with Send in Mail. Apple’s Smart Reply does too. Separately configured Mail rules, scheduled sending and other automations can behave differently.
