When MailTwin fits
You prefer a one-time app licence, already use an AI provider, want to choose models or run Ollama, or need its summaries and cleanup tools. Its listed macOS 13+ support also covers older systems than LittleDraft’s macOS 15+ requirement.
When LittleDraft adds value
You want AI included without managing keys or provider billing. Your replies need imported guides, policies or captured details, and Pro Pre-Drafts would help prepare suggestions for eligible unread mail. Both products offer local AI options on suitable hardware.
Compare the app and AI costs.
MailTwin’s app purchase and cloud-provider usage are separate costs; a local setup can avoid a cloud inference bill. LittleDraft’s monthly price includes its stated cloud allowances. Compare your expected usage, USD versus EUR, applicable taxes and final checkout totals. Neither option is universally cheaper for every inbox.
LittleDraft’s paid monthly plans renew until cancelled. Allowances reset each billing period and do not roll over; requests using an exhausted allowance pause. Pro Buy Once is not currently available for checkout.
Privacy: local drafting and online services
MailTwin says cloud requests go directly from your Mac to your chosen provider, including the necessary message or draft and selected style/context examples. That provider’s policies apply. Its Apple Intelligence, Ollama and supported local-server options can process locally. Licensing, updates, configuration and optional telemetry are separate service traffic. [6]
LittleDraft Cloud AI sends permitted drafting context through LittleDraft’s service to its AI provider. Pro Private Mode processes supported drafts on your Mac without automatic cloud fallback. Online activation is required first; monthly local access must refresh for a renewed paid period. Account services and email delivery remain online.
What the 0.20.56 test build adds
The test build adds clearer mode and activation indicators, stronger English/German instruction handling, a bounded German polishing pass and checks that help catch language errors, missing identifiers or copied instructions. It also refines the composer and limits background work under resource pressure. Review every reply; these checks do not guarantee accuracy.
Little Engine remains online. In the 0.20.56 test build, invoking it from Private AI shows what information may leave the Mac and requires approval for that request. Ordinary drafting stays local. The stable 0.20.52 release predates this research exception.
Read the 0.20.56 test-build notesA few practical questions
Do both work with Apple Mail?
Yes. Both work alongside Apple Mail rather than replacing it. Review the generated draft and its recipients before sending in Mail.
Which is cheaper?
It depends on usage and your AI setup. MailTwin charges for the app separately from any cloud-provider usage; local engines can avoid that usage bill. LittleDraft includes stated AI allowances in its monthly price. Compare currencies, taxes and provider costs before deciding.
Do I need an API key for either app?
LittleDraft does not require your own API key. MailTwin’s cloud options use your provider credentials, while its documented Apple Intelligence, Ollama and local-server options can work without a cloud-provider key.
Does either app send emails automatically?
LittleDraft prepares drafts for you to review and send. MailTwin’s setup guide also describes manual sending in Mail and says saved actions do not automatically send mail. Inbox Cleanup is a separate workflow from sending replies.
Can I use LittleDraft without internet?
Eligible Pro users can draft locally after online activation while the local license remains valid. Model setup, activation, renewal, online research and email delivery need internet. Private Mode never silently falls back to Cloud AI.
