Apple Intelligence in Mail: What It Does, and When You Need More
If you use Apple Mail on a recent Mac, you may already have AI built in. Apple Intelligence adds several features to Mail. For many people they're all they need. For others, especially people who answer a lot of business email, they're a starting point.
Here's an honest look at both.
What Apple Intelligence does in Mail
According to Apple, on supported Macs Apple Intelligence in Mail offers:
- Smart Reply: suggested replies you can pick and then refine.
- Summaries: short summaries of messages and long threads.
- Priority Messages: time-sensitive emails surfaced at the top.
- Writing Tools: rewrite, proofread and change the tone of text you've written.
It's included with macOS, so there's no extra cost. It needs a supported Mac with Apple Intelligence turned on, and it isn't available in every language or region. Check Apple's support pages for your setup.
Where it's enough
Apple Intelligence is a great fit if:
- You get a moderate amount of mail and replies are usually short.
- You mainly want to understand your inbox faster (summaries, priorities).
- You don't mind replies that sound a bit generic and edit them yourself.
Where people want more
Users who write a lot of email often run into the same limits:
- "It doesn't sound like me." Generic replies need editing before they feel right.
- "It doesn't know our details." Prices, policies, opening hours and product facts aren't in the email itself.
- "Work and personal need different voices." A support inbox and a personal inbox shouldn't sound the same.
- "I want drafts waiting for me." Especially for recurring questions.
Your options
1. Stay with Apple Intelligence only. Free and built in. Ideal for light email.
2. Switch to a different email app with AI. Several apps bring their own AI, but you'd leave Apple Mail and change how you work.
3. Add an assistant that works alongside Apple Mail. You keep Apple Mail, its accounts and your habits, and add a tool focused on writing replies.
Where LittleDraft fits
LittleDraft is option 3. It works alongside Apple Mail on macOS 15 or later:
- Your style, per account. LittleDraft learns from sent emails you choose and keeps a separate writing style for each account.
- A few words in, a full reply out. Type a short direction or pick accept, decline or ask for details.
- Your facts. The Reference Library lets replies use your guides and policies. On Pro, Capture Context brings in information from other apps.
- Research when needed. Little Engine can look things up online, and you review the sources.
- Pre-Drafts (Pro). Reply suggestions for selected unread emails, prepared in advance.
- Nothing sent automatically. You review and send from Apple Mail.
It also builds on Apple Intelligence rather than against it. On Pro, Private AI uses Apple's own on-device model to write replies locally on compatible Macs. It uses no cloud reply credits, works offline after activation, and never silently switches to the cloud.
Can you use both?
Yes. LittleDraft doesn't replace Apple Mail, so Apple's summaries and Priority Messages keep working. Many people use Apple Intelligence to read faster and LittleDraft to reply faster.
